Handel’s story of intrigue and ignorance in Ancient Rome receives its first depictions in the Met, where mezzo-soprano star Joyce DiDonato is a controller and power plant of Agrippina and Harry Bicket. Sir David McVicars’ play ingeniously shaped the abuse of the power of this dark comedy to the present day, where it must be loud. Starring mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as son of Agrippinas and future emperor Nerone, soprano Brenda Rae as Poppea girl, counterpart Roland Davies as ambitious officer Ottone and bass Matthew Rose as Emperor Claudius.
After impressing audiences with his 2015 Lulu staging, South African artist William Kentridge now focuses his extraordinary visual imagination on another Berg masterpiece set in the pre-WWII apocalyptic setting. Music director Met Yannick Nzet-Sguin is on the podium for this important event, with baritone Peter Mattei playing his part as the title character. Soprano Elza van den Heever is Wozzeck’s unfaithful companion. The team also includes tenor Christopher Ventris as drums major, low baritone Christian Van Horn as physician, and tenor Gerhard Siegel as captain.
